The Six Triple Eight faced numerous challenges during their mission. As an all-Black, all-female battalion, they operated in a racially segregated military and society. Despite serving their country, they endured discrimination and prejudice, both within the military and in the communities where they were stationed.

In addition to societal challenges, the working conditions were far from ideal. The warehouses they worked in were unheated, poorly lit, and infested with rats and other vermin. The volume of mail was overwhelming, with letters and packages piled high and some dating back years. Despite these obstacles, the women devised an efficient system to sort and deliver the mail, often working 24/7 in shifts to accomplish their mission.

The battalion’s mantra, “No Mail, Low Morale,” reflected their understanding of the psychological importance of their work. By delivering mail promptly, they ensured that soldiers stayed connected to their loved ones, significantly boosting morale.
